450 poor families receive goods from Malacañang

CEBU - At least 450 families in Cebu City have received packs of goods from the government as part of what President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has promised during her last visit to Cebu to support the indigent residents of the city.

The other day, the office of Presidential Management Staff director general Cerge Remonde, together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Central Command Armed Forces of the Philippines gave out family packs to families from sitio Tabuk Canal, barangay, Cebu City.

The family packs contained six assorted canned goods, three kilos of rice and used clothing of different sizes.

DSWD assistant regional director Evelyn Macaprobre said the goods were for the poorest of the poor in the area who have no or lesser income and can hardly buy food for a day.

Mrs. Marit Remonde, wife of Sec. Remonde led the distribution of the goods together with representatives from the barangay and the DSWD.

DSWD said 50 more families in the area will be given packs next week.

Grace Yana, action officer on disaster management plan of the DSWD disaster management regional field office, said they have also helped other depressed barangays last year through the help of the offices of Cebu City Congressmen Raul Del Mar and Tony Cuenco.

Non-government units have also worked hand in hand with DSWD to help barangays that are in need. — AJ de la Torre, CIT MassComm Intern/WAB   (THE FREEMAN)
