CEBU – Residents of Boljoon town yesterday held a celebration of their own Sinulog feast in honor of the miraculous child Senior Santo Niño.

With the theme “Kalambuan sa Boljoon” the Sinulog de Boljoon 2009 started with a Mass at 10 a.m. officiated by parish priest Rev. Milton Medida.

At 4 p.m., a fluvial procession was held that was participated by 17 motor bancas from different barangays of the town. The best decorated banca got a cash prize of P5,000, while the second and third prizes were given P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

Mayor Wargong Derama also offered a thanksgiving Mass at 6 p.m. The event was highlighted by a dance contest where seven contingents from various barangays vied for the cash prizes of P30,000 for the first prize, P20,000 for the second and P10,000 for the third prize. There were also special awards.

The prizes were provided by the organization of Sto. Niño based in Boljoon and the local government.

A motocross competition, which was open to all riders who wanted to join, was also held in the barangay Baclayan race track. The competition was sponsored by Provincial Board member Teresita “Daday” Celis.

Despite the large crowd no major untoward incident was reported by policemen led by Insp. Edward Villarin.

SPO1 Roderick Roma said that even before the event, they have already deployed personnel to maintain peace and order in their place especially as they expected balikbayan visitors. — Christopher Gabriel Bonjoc/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
