New barangay captain of Bulacao takes oath

CEBU - The new barangay captain of Bulacao, Cebu City yesterday assumed his post after he took his oath of office before Cebu City acting mayor Michael Rama.

Jose Gabiana took his oath during a ceremony held at the mayor’s office shortly before noon yesterday. The event was attended by some Bulacao councilmen.

Gabiana, 57, the first barangay councilman, replaced barangay captain Romeo Alit who succumbed to cardiac arrest at his house while preparing to attend a barangay meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Gabiana said they have decided to recommend to the city mayor Alit’s wife, Nenita, to take over the vacant slot in the barangay council.

Under the law, the barangay council members have the power to recommend the replacement in case of vacancy and that it is the mayor who will appoint.

“Mao na ang among gisabotan pero dili pa na final. Wala pa kami masayod kun unsay hukom sa asawa ni Kapitan Alit,” Gabiana said after taking his oath.

Alit was the second neophyte barangay captain who died of illness this year. The first was Lorega-San Miguel barangay captain Lorenzo Monsanto, who died due of heart failure. — Rene U. Borromeo/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
