Barangay disaster councils on alert for landslides

CEBU – No flash floods were recorded in Cebu City following the heavy downpour yesterday but the Barangay Disaster Coordinating Councils have been placed on high alert in case of untoward incidents, especially in the mountain barangays.

Councilor Gerardo Carillo, action officer of the City Disaster Coordinating Council they are keeping an eye on the mountain barangays where landslides usually occur during heavy rains.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services has already advised residents in landslide prone areas to be extra cautious and to vacate if necessary to avoid figuring in accidents.

PAGASA said a tail end of a cold front is currently affecting the Visayas, which brought the sudden rains and thunderstorms. At least one more typhoon is expected to enter the Philippines before the year ends.

Yesterday, strong rains lasting to an hour flooded the city streets with knee-deep waters, particularly along the stretch of V. Gullas Street, Colon Street and Magallanes Street.

The creek beside Gaisano Main also overflowed as floodwaters rushed from the higher area in barangay Kamagayan. — Ferliza C. Contratista/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
