Robbers fall at checkpoint
CEBU - Two alleged robbers were arrested by policemen at a checkpoint along F. Aranas St., barangay Duljo-Fatima last Thursday night.
The two suspects were identified as Aljie Cancio, 20, and Rolando Duazo, 23, both residents of sitio Villagonzalo 2, barangay Tejero, Cebu City.
Waterfront Police Station chief Sr. Insp. David Señor said that they were conducting a checkpoint in the area and stopped a jeepney around 10:20 p.m. when the suspects, who were onboard, disembarked and immediately ran.
PO1 Jose Randell Buscato chased Duazo and shouted at him to stop but Duazo fired at the policeman instead which prompted the latter to fire back, hitting Duazo in the nape.
Duazo was later taken to the Cebu City Medical Center while the police were able to arrest Cancio.
Police recovered a .32 cal. pistol with an empty magazine from Duazo and a fan knife from Cancio.
While Señor said that two had another accomplice who was able to escape, Cancio alleged that only he and Duazo connived to rob.
Cancio said they were on their way home to Mandaue City as they were not able to spot a prospective victim all night. He also added he had just been released from prison last September after he was jailed in 2006 for highway robbery and has robbed four times since.
Duazo had also been released last October after being jailed for the same offense.
City police chief Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comendador said the shooting of one of the suspects was necessary since they fired at policemen. — Niña Chrismae G. Sumacot/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
