Friars tell city: Consult us on Magellan's Cross repair

-

CEBU - Augustinian friars managing the Basilica del Santo Niño are asking the Cebu City government to first consult them of any planned renovations on the Magellan’s Cross shrine.

In a letter to Acting Mayor Michael Rama, Fr. Candido Saladaga Jr., prior of the Basilica community, said any planned structural repair of the Magellan’s Cross shrine must first be presented to them for approval, considering that the shrine is reportedly still under their custody.

“Before any renovation and repair of the Magellan’s Cross in the future, there should be a written contract specially indicating that the historical landmark is still owned by the Basilica and the Augustinian fathers still remain their right over it once the project repair is completed,” the letter reads.

The letter came after the Basilica heard of the city’s plan to renovate the Magellan’s Cross shrine to adhere to the improvements being made on the park where it is located. And because the shrine is already considered a tourist attraction, the city also plans to include it in the beautification project.

Along with the beautification of the park, a proposal is also pending with the City Council to rename the park “Plaza Sugbu.” The park is situated between the old Cebu City Hall and the Basilica.

The cross is considered to be a symbol of Christianity because it was Ferdinand Magellan who reportedly planted it in its current location when the area was still part of the sea shore. — Rene U. Borromeo/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
