Child abuse rap filed against school teacher

CEBU - The high school teacher who allegedly molested minors in Barangay Luz was formally charged yesterday for acts of lasciviousness in relation to Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

But because the case is bailable, Faustino Maghanoy Cabrera, 44, may be freed today, as he is expected to pay the P24,000 bail. Cabrera teaches high school at a university here in the city.

Luz barangay captain Nida Cabrera herself was disappointed upon hearing that the suspect could actually bail out.

The teacher was placed under arrest last Tuesday during an entrapment operation when he tried to meet two minors.

As of yesterday afternoon, 13 children have issued sworn statements on their experience with Cabrera.

The Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau will be filing 12 more complaints against the teacher today.

Cabrera’s arrest served as a follow-up operation by operatives led by SPO1 Filomeno Mendaros after police pounced on Lewis Dacanay last Sunday afternoon.

Dacanay, a computer engineer, has been charged with two counts of rape, serious illegal detention, acts of lasciviousness, and child abuse before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office. — Jasmin R. Uy/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
