City Council okays P1.6 million for rehab of Pasil Fish Port

CEBU - The Cebu City Council yesterday allocated P1.6 million for the rehabilitation of the Pasil Fish Port, which is heavily damaged due to constant seawater movement.

Councilor Gerardo Carillo, who sponsored the resolution for the appropriation of P1,608,321, said the fish port needs to be attended to immediately because its underneath portion has caved in, creating a hollow space below.

It was Vice Mayor Michael Rama who called up the attention of the councilors after somebody informed him of the status of the P85 million fish port that was funded by the Belgian government.

The amount for the repair and rehabilitation of the fish port would be taken from the city’s calamity budget.

Carillo said the city has been declared under a continuing state of calamity since February in order to respond to calamities and that the calamity funds be utilized for the rehabilitation efforts.

Although the fish port is located in barangay Sawang Calero, it is situated in the boundary of barangay Pasil.

 Rama said he observed several cracks on the port’s seawalls that he believes might trigger collapse anytime if they will not be attended to.

Sawang Calero barangay captain Benjamin Zabate confirmed that the fish port’s structure has been damaged.

Zabate also supported Rama’s claim, saying that the situation of the fish port has been serious. — Rene U. Borromeo/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
