Fisherman's killer charged

-

CEBU - A man accused in the brutal killing of a fisherman in Poro, Camotes was charged with murder before the Cebu Provincial Prosecutors’ Office.

Oliver Escoton allegedly hacked Benigno Perosos to death in the afternoon of September 12 in Sitio Kantaw-ang, barangay Esperanza, Poro, Camotes Island.

Emiliano Caya, in his affidavit said he saw Escoton brutally hacked Perosos from behind that caused the latter’s instantaneous death.

Caya said he was on his way to meet a neighbor when he saw Escoton by chance hiding from a banana trunk.

The witness further narrated that when Perosos passed by the accused, the latter suddenly attacked the victim without any provocation. Caya said he was able to have a good view of the crime because he hid himself behind a tree.

Escoton allegedly continued hacking the victim even if the latter was already on the ground.

“Escoton left the victim lying on the ground but he came back and turned the body of the victim facing to him and started again hacking the head several times and stabbed the chest with a sharp pointed bolo,” Caya said in his affidavit.

The victim’s wife, Susana, said she did not know of any grudge between her husband and the accused. She added she was only surprised when one of their neighbors informed her that Escoton killed her husband.

The prosecutor’s office already filed the information of the murder case against Escoton before the Regional Trial Court in Danao City where he was not allowed to post bail. – Fred P. Languido/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
