Liloan to plant camote to mark Serging's 128th birth anniversary

CEBU - The Municipality of Liloan will be planting sweet potatoes tomorrow as a way to commemorate the 128th birth anniversary of Sergio Osmeña Sr., the 2nd president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines.

Town mayor Vincent Frasco recently issued Executive Orders 2008-012 and 2008-05 declaring every 9th of September as Community Service Day and Tree-Planting Day.

Frasco issued a memorandum for all town officials and employees to participate in the tree-planting activity in barangay Cabadiangan. Even honorarium-based personnel, job order workers, staff of national government agencies, barangay officials, and youth leaders based in Liloan are urged to participate in the activity.

“In these trying times of global economic crisis, perceived food shortage and environmental problems, we must steer community action,” Frasco said.

Participants of the activity will gather early morning at the municipal hall before proceeding to barangay Cabadiangan.

When he was still president, Fidel Ramos had declared September as Philippine Civil Service Month, which mandates government agencies to bring public services to the doorsteps of the communities or barangays.

In a related development, all department heads of the town have also been directed to include the SAKSAK (Sinanduloy alang sa Kabusog, Sinanduloy alang sa Kahimsog) recipe in meals served during training, meetings, and seminars. The recipe involves sweet potatoes mixed into the rice.

The SAKSAK program is in line with the provincial government’s advocacy to help the public cope with the rising prices of rice and to make the country’s staple food more tasty and nutritious. — Garry B. Lao/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
