Antique eyes sisterhood relationship with Cebu

CEBU - Officials of Antique expressed optimism that the proposed sisterhood relationship to be forged with Cebu would open opportunities for both provinces.

In a resolution sent to Cebu provincial government, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Antique signifies its intent of establishing a sisterhood relationship with Cebu.

Board Member Fernando Corvera, who sponsored the resolution, said “this sisterhood agreement would foster not only closer relationship between the provinces and its people but also would result to better growth and development.”

The Antique officials believe that the opportunity for mutual benefits to adopt Cebu as a sister province will be tremendous in terms of economic, infrastructure, arts and culture, information technology and mass media.

“The Province of Cebu can absorb idle/surplus labor from Antique and likewise Antiquenos can engage in a meaningful and productive life,” the resolution read.

Recently, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia handed financial assistance to Antique Gov. Salvacion Perez (P2 million), Iloilo Gov. Neil Tupas (P3 million), Biliran Gov. Roger Espina (P1 million), and Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez (P2 million) at a meeting in Iloilo City last month following the onslaught of Typhoon Frank in the Visayas. 

Perez thanked Garcia for the assistance.

“Thank you for sympathizing with us even if Cebu also experienced damage. Your coming here, that to us means a lot. You come here and give us aid, that touches our hearts,” Perez said. — Garry B. Lao/LPM
