Alcoy opens new town hall

-

The newly constructed P30-million municipal hall of Alcoy town was formally inaugurated the other day.

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, who provided financial support for the construction of the municipal hall attended the inauguration ceremony.

Alcoy Mayor Nicomedes delos Santos said the construction of the new municipal hall started in 2003. When he ran for vice mayor after his term ended in 2004, Antonio Plando, now the vice mayor, continued the project.

However, lack of funds delayed the project.

Delos Santos said they asked the support from Zubiri, Deputy Speaker Pablo Garcia and Governor Gwen Garcia and also tapped other fund sources for the completion of the project.

Zubiri promised an additional P500,000 in financial assistance to the town while Deputy Speaker Garcia also said that he will continue supporting Alcoy.

Alcoy is a 5th class municipality with a population of 14,571 based on the 2007 Census.

It is approximately 93 kilometers from Cebu City and is mainly an agricultural town with the rest of the communities relying on fishing and backyard farming. The country’s largest dolomite quarry is mined in Barangay Pugalo.

Alcoy has eight barangays: Atabay, Daan-Lungsod, Guiwang, Nug-as, Pasol, Poblacion, Pugalo and San Agustin. — Jose P. Sollano/BRP
