American shot dead over dirty finger

-

Flashing the “dirty finger” proved deadly for an American veteran of the Gulf War when he was shot dead by an angry guard of the compound where he lived after the suspect got irked with the victim’s rudeness.

The incident happened yesterday dawn at the gate of Calderon Compound, sitio Banawa, barangay Guadalupe.  The victim was identified as Myron Joseph Francois, 57, of Louisiana, USA, and temporarily residing at the said place with his fiancée Maylyn Alod.

Francois was shot in the right side of the chest and right forearm with the .38 cal. service revolver of the suspect Charlie Pilapil Loon, 37, a member of the Archangel Security Agency and a resident of A. Lopez St., barangay Calamba.

Homicide investigator, SPO2 Rey Cuyos said the incident was witnessed by taxi driver Pedro Carampatan, 53, of Zarlene Taxi who was driving the victim home.

Carampatan upon seeing his passenger shot by the security guard immediately sped off to the Cebu City Police Office and reported the incident.

When Homicide investigators arrived at the scene, other policemen from the Mobile Patrol Group were already in the area.  The suspect had already surrendered and turned over his gun with two live bullets and four empty shells in the cylinder.

Police also recovered one slug inside the cab of Carampatan.

Cuyos said the suspect also called for police assistance after shooting the victim and they found Francois already lying dead by the roadside in a pool of blood.

The suspect claimed that prior to the shooting, they arrived at the gate and when the suspect checked the taxi of out procedure Francois reportedly got irked.

Francois reportedly disembarked, clasped his hands together and struck the guard from behind, sending him against the wall of the guardhouse.

Loon said that while the victim was attacking him he kept boasting that he is a police officer in the US and will report the guard to his superiors.  Loon also said the suspect seemed to be drunk at that time.

After the attack Francois went back to the taxi and ordered Carampatan to go in the compound.  Minutes later on the way out, Loon flagged down the taxicab and asked Carampatan what was wrong with his passenger.

To his surprise, Francois was still in the cab, Loon then decided to ask Francois himself but the American allegedly left the cab and flashed a dirty finger at him.  Feeling insulted, Loon drew out his gun and shot Francois several times.

The American managed to run back inside the compound but fell on the ground few meters from the entrance gate.  Witnesses said that they even overheard the victim saying “I’m sorry” before falling on the road.

Loon then called up the police and reported that he had shot a man.  He later said this was not the first time the foreigner was rude to him as the victim reportedly called him names on many occasions.

According to Maylyn, the victim arrived here in Cebu last December 14, he reportedly confided to her that he is suffering Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome after returning from his tour of duty in Iraq.

She also said Francois is having vacation here while waiting for the reply on his application to be a sheriff back in the US.  Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
