Toledo man survives two suicide attempts

-

A reportedly mentally disturbed middle-aged man tried to kill himself twice.

Erick Sarmiento, 33, of Purok Sto. Niño, barangay Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City created a commotion at the Information Section of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center when he broke a glass door, took a shard from the broken glass, and then used it to slice his neck yesterday dawn.

Responding policemen from the Fuente Police Station took Sarmiento to the Emergency Room.

Sarmiento reportedly first attempted to kill himself with the use of a bread knife inside his house on August 1, Friday, at around 9 p.m.

Initial investigation conducted by elements of the Toledo City Police revealed that Sarmiento is in “mental depression” after the death of his father last July 22.

His mother is said to have abandoned them the next day and that Sarmiento’s elder brother would hit him for every time they would argue on just about anything.

PO1 Celso Makidato and PO1 Aldwin Pepito, in a talk with Sarmiento, said that the latter mentioned of an unidentified person who tried to kill him on Friday night while he was lying to rest. The very reason why he would want to kill himself, he said.

Sarmiento used the bread knife to slice his neck which gave him a cut about three inches long and five centimeters deep.

He was rushed by neighbors to the Toledo City General Hospital, but was later transferred to the VSMMC where he attempted to kill himself for the second time.

There is no update yet from the police on Sarmiento’s condition as of this writing.

According to sources, modern medicine view suicide as a mental health concern associated with psychological factors such as difficulty in coping with depression, fear or pressures.

An article from the wires wrote that “most people who attempt suicide do not complete suicide on a first attempt; those who later gain a history of repetitions are significantly more at risk of eventual completion.” — Jessica Ann Pareja/MEEV
