Boy slain in gang violence

-

A boy was killed in yet another gang-related incident after his group was shot at by two men on a red motorcycle believed to be members of a rival gang in sitio Bagong Buhay, barangay Carreta, Cebu City yesterday dawn.

Ironically, Mark Tagalog Tobias, 16, a high school student and resident of sitio Malinao of the said barangay, was not a member of any gang.

SPO1 Rogelio Nedamo of the Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office said the victim was drinking with a group of ten --including his friends Crips gang members Jonard Ancajas, Aldwin Ancajas and their companions Jess Brian Demecillo and a 17-year-old-- in a store near the barangay hall when two men on a motorcycle arrived and asked them at gunpoint: “Mga miyembro mo sa Crips?”

Before they could answer the man riding pillion reportedly opened fire at Demecillo and the minor, but the gun misfired and they sped off as the minor threw beer bottles at them.

Unknown to drinkers the men made a U-turn and came back with gun ready and shot at them.

The victim, who was not able to run for safety, was hit in the back thrice.  He was declared dead on arrival at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, while the others escaped unscathed.

Demecillo suspected that they were members of the Bloods gang as they had red scarves hanging from their pockets.

“Nagduda man to sila nga mga Crips mi pero sa napu nga nag istambay duha ra ato ang sakop sa Crips ug kadto namatay dili to siya membro,” Demecillo said.

Police said the relatives of the victim even tried to chase the assailants towards barangay Lorega-San Miguel but lost them. One of them was later identified as certain “Jomar,” a resident of the area.

Last Saturday near the Abellana National High School and last Sunday along Gen. Maxilom Ave., two people were also shot and wounded in incidents blamed on gang conflict.  Edwin Ian Melecio and Ramil V. Ayuman/BRP
