An inmate of the Cebu City Jail facing murder charges managed to escape from his guard by picking his handcuffs then jumping out of the Cebu City Medical Center last Friday evening.
CCJ warden Sr. Supt. Efren Nemeño identified the escapee as Ruben Janubas, 26, of barangay Sapangdaku who was issued a commitment order from the city prosecutors office last July 2.
Janubas is accused of killing a 14-year-old boy last June 29 in sitio Cabarang, barangay Sapangdaku, by slashing his neck.
The boy also suffered several bruises to the head and body, but it was believed he fought back and was able to stab Janubas before he died.
Janubas was still near the crime scene when the boy’s friends came looking for him later that same day. He failed to escape because of his wounds.
While he was being treated at the CCMC, Janubas escaped from his jail guard JO1 Jerdon Lee Sature by climbing down a tree from a second floor window.
Nemeño said, nurses of the said hospital told him that they already removed the suspect’s dextrose as he was already recuperating from his stab wound.
Sature reported he thought the suspect was already sleeping after checking on him and seeing he was still handcuffed to the bed.
He went outside the hospital to buy coffee, but when he came back the nurses said he had jumped out of the window and climbed down a tree after he picked his handcuffs.
Nemeño said they have already asked the city government to provide them a room for sick inmates since 2005 but until now the request was not realized.
The CCJ has already asked the help of the city police to help recapture the suspect.
Sature is now under camp restriction while an investigation is being conducted. He may face administrative charges for gross neglect of duty if found at fault for the escape of his prisoner and criminal charges for infidelity in the custody of a prisoner. — Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
