Dynamite explosion kills fisher in Daanbantayan

A 50-year-old man was killed while his son was injured in a dynamite explosion in barangay Agujo, Daanbantayan town last Tuesday.

Alberto Capilitan was killed on the spot after the dynamite that he ignited suddenly exploded.  His 24-year-old son, Bertly John, sustained several injuries.

The two reportedly went fishing in the seawaters off Agujo when the incident happened Tuesday afternoon.

The report reaching Cebu Provincial Police Office said while they were out in the sea, Alberto noticed a school of fish and decided to ignite the dynamite.

But the dynamite suddenly exploded and severing his right arm. Alberto also suffered severe injuries in different parts of his body and died instantly.

Bertly John sustained wounds to his left face and body.

Agujo barangay tanods rushed Bertly John to Daanbantayan District Hospital but due to his serious condition, he was later transferred to Vicente Sotto Hospital in Cebu City.

PO3 Dennis Velez of Daanbantayan Police Station told The FREEMAN that they are still investigating whether Capilitan had been involved in illegal fishing activities prior to the incident. — Joy Kareen T. Saliente/LPM
