Some priests helping NFA distribute rice

-

Contrary to the statement of Msgr. Achilles Dakay, media liaison officer of the Archdiocese of Cebu, some priests have already taken the initiatives of putting up “Bigasan sa Parokya” in their parishes to help the National Food Authority distribute rice.

In an interview, NFA-7 enforcement and investigation head Edgar Diez revealed that there are already parishes that serve as retail outlets of NFA rice through the “Bigasan sa Parokya.”

Diez mentioned the Mabolo and Bogo City parishes, which recently opened their respective “Bigasan” outlet. He said this is a big help to the agency in the distribution of rice.

He added that the NFA-7 is looking forward to the implementation of the family access cards by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

“These cards are very helpful for them especially in making sure that the subsidized” rice would reach the poorest of the poor families, he said.

Diez explained that while there are some who take advantage in the distribution of NFA rice, the cards would help identify those who would avail of the rice.

He also mentioned that the NFA continues to monitor these activities while the access cards are not yet implemented.

DSWD regional director Teodolo Romo earlier assured that they will implement the access cards as soon as possible.

Diez said the families that will qualify in a lifestyle check of DSWD will use the card to avail themselves of the rice subsidies. But he said the agency has not yet received the specific guidelines for the lifestyle check of prospective holders.

Meanwhile, Diez further assured that there is enough supply of rice in Cebu that will last for the next 67 days or until the next harvesting season in July.    Anthony S. Teo and Ferliza C. Contratista/LPM
