DENR urged to act against indiscriminate shark fishing

Members of the Cebu Provincial Board have passed a resolution urging the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to create measures against the indiscriminate fishing of sharks within Philippine waters.

The resolution stemmed from reports of indiscriminate fishing of sharks which reportedly has reached to an alarming level.

Studies have shown that a shark’s fin, which has been a major cause for the indiscriminate fishing of sharks, contains high levels of mercury that is harmful human.

The resolution added that every living creature has a role to play that is vital to the people’s daily lives.

“A balanced-population marine life is a good indication of a healthy environment and any imbalance in our ecosystem will ultimately adversely affect everyone of us,” the resolution reads. — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/LPM
