Fuel company initiates lectures on road safety
Alarmed by the increasing number of road accidents that killed children, a fuel company launched nationwide a series of lectures on road safety to educate children and their parents.
Officials of the Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Company have decided to conduct lectures on road safety. One of these was held at a fast-food outlet in the
Those who were invited to attend the seminars were children of drivers of public utility vehicles.
James Galang, spokesman of the fuel firm, and Ma. Emma Reyes, road transport safety analyst, pointed out to participants that road accidents could be avoided if traffic rules are obeyed consistently and that seatbelts are worn while onboard public transport.
Parents were reminded to guide their children on how to use the pedestrian lane, to cross safely, to walk on the right part of the road so to avoid speeding vehicles.
The children were also reminded that in streets where there is no traffic light, they must stop and wait until it is safe to cross.
“Never ever run into the street if your ball bounces toward that direction or when you are in a hurry. Also, do not play in parking lots or driveways because the drivers are not expecting you there. After dark, wear light or reflective clothing to help drivers see you,” the lecturers emphasized.

Traffic authorities in other countries also conduct showing of traffic safety videos in schools reminding students about safety practices such as making sure vehicles have come to a stop before they cross the road.
