CPDRC inmates to perform dance medley on March 29

-

Internationally acclaimed dancing inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center will be performing again by the end of the month via a dance medley show featuring 14 certified hit dance tunes.

Byron Garcia, Capitol consultant on security matters and the overseer of the dancing inmates, has said the inmates will perform non-stop for one and a half hours on March 29.

Garcia also said that local and foreign tourists are expected to witness the non-stop dance show. The CPDRC facility can accommodate 300 spectators.

He added that donations collected from spectators go directly to the savings accounts of the 1,500 dancing inmates, the amount divided equally among themselves.

In their show last month, a total of P15,000 were donated by spectators for the dancing inmates. The show was staged for free.

Rehearsals are conducted four hours a day as part of the inmates’ physical fitness program.

To recall, the “dancing jailbirds” were featured once again over Cable News Network in their dance interpretation of “U Can’t Touch This” by popular rappers Soulja Boy and MC Hammer.

The dancing inmates first snatched attention last August when their performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was uploaded on the YouTube, a free video hosting website. The performance was named by Time Magazine as one of the top five best viewed videos for 2007.

They also caught the attention of British Broadcasting Corporation and of at least 40 of the top newspapers and magazines around the world. — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/MEEV
