Korean national arrested for trying to bribe police

-

A Korean national was yesterday arrested right inside the police station after he allegedly tried to bribe a policeman for the release of another Korean earlier caught in possession of illegal drugs in barangay Tejero yesterday morning.

The arrest happened inside the Waterfront Police Station when 40-year-old Park Chan Mo, who has been staying at a pension house in Lapu-Lapu City, gave P14,000 cash to SPO2 Darryl Alalim.

Alalim was with three other policemen — PO3 Reynaldo Malazarte, PO2 Leonard Dinsay, and PO1 Jodan Batucan — who arrested yesterday dawn another Korean national, 42-year-old Lee Jong Soo, for drug possession along Morelos Street in Villagonzalo II, barangay Tejero.

Park, a native of Seoul, South Korea, has been staying with Lee, a native of Dong Dei Chow City of South Korea, in the same pension house in Lapu-Lapu City.

After Lee’s arrest, Park went to police station, talked for a few minutes with Lee in the detention cell, then went to the police investigation room and talked to Alalim.

Alalim narrated that Park wanted to help the Korean friend then offered to the policeman the money he was carrying. “I want to give money. Freedom of my friend,” the Korean allegedly told Alalim in broken English.

Alalim said he informed Park that bribing public officials is punishable by Philippine laws, and asked the Korean if he knew about this law.

While Alalim was explaining the consequences of the act, Park reportedly kept on nodding his head then still handed the money to the policeman. This prompted Alalim to arrest Park.

At this juncture, Park allegedly resisted and claimed that he just wanted to put bail for his friend’s freedom. Alalim, however, countered that he already explained to  Park that putting up bail is done in court in the company of lawyers, and not in police stations.

Reporters tried to get the side of both Koreans but the two refused to talk and made incomprehensible uttering instead then slept inside the detention cell.

In another development, the group of Alalim also chased and arrested a certain Norberto Salcedo Lim, 50, a resident of Tejero for possession of drug paraphernalia. — Edwin Ian Melecio/RAE
