3 charged for mauling cop

The Cebu Provincial Prosecutor’s Office has indicted three people who allegedly mauled and nearly killed a policeman who tried to pacify a trouble among his former schoolmates during their high school reunion in Catmon town last May.

Indicted for a complex crime of direct assault with frustrated homicide were Arden Sucalit, Niel Rollan and Renan Alcasara.

The three were accused of mauling and stabbing PO1 Rey Prosia, a field training policeman assigned to the Carbon Police Station in Cebu City, in the dawn of May 7 while they were attending a grand alumni reunion of the Panalipan National High School.

Prosia said a certain Romeo Dumalag asked his assistance because he was allegedly boxed by Ben Jorquia. As a police officer, Prosia said he tried to pacify, but Alcasara and Rollan allegedly mauled him until he fell to the ground.

While on the ground Sucalit then allegedly stabbed him three times in the back using an ice pick before they fled. The three vehemently denied the charges, claiming that it was Prosia who provoked the fight.

The accused claimed that they did not also know that Prosia was a policeman.

However, assistant provincial prosecutor Rustom Presas Jr. ruled that the alibi of the three accused is inherently weak over the positive identification by the victim.

Presas’ recommendation to charge the three with a complex crime of direct assault with frustrated homicide was approved by provincial prosecutor Pepita Jane Petralba.
