Dancing inmates at the Cebu Provincial Development and Rehabilitation Center will get P1,000 each as reward for making it to the Time Magazine’s list of most watched videos.
This is the second time that Governor Gwendolyn Garcia gave cash incentives to the inmates. In August, the dancing prisoners also received financial bonus from the governor when they grabbed international attention for their “Thriller” dance video.
Capitol security consultant Byron Garcia had earlier said that the dancing inmates may also perform as guests in next month’s Sinulog. But he must first have a court order and approval from the Sinulog Foundation.
Time Magazine, the world’s most prestigious magazine, listed the inmates’ “Thriller” dance video as one of the most watched videos on the Internet in its “Best of the Year” issue.
On Time’s list of the top 10 web videos, the CPDRC dance – which the magazine dubbed as “Thrilla in Manila” – ranked fifth.
Byron said the dancing inmates’ participation in the Sinulog, an annual festival that draws the international crowd, will showcase the pride of Cebu through the Sinulog dance.
As of now, the dancing inmates are busy bopping to the 1980s hits “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins and “Jump” by the Pointer Sisters. — Mitchelle Palaubsanon/LPM
