Cop, two Britons, six others hurt after guard’s gun goes off

-

Eight people, including a policeman and two Britons were injured on Wednesday night at the Sta. Fe wharf in Bantayan Island when the shotgun of a security guard accidentally went off and the pellets hit them.

The policeman, 37-year-old PO1 Henry Asintista of the Madridejos Police, was hit by shotgun pellets on his right shoulder and left elbow.

The Britons were 25-year-old Niphi Simon Pratt, whose legs were both wounded, and 23-year-old Jessie Anderson who suffered injuries in his right elbow and left leg.

The others were Relito Villaroel, 34, who got wounds in his legs; Christo Ray Monteadora, 30, in his back below his right shoulder; and Romeo Escaran Jr, 28, and John Paul Illustrisimo, 21, who were injured in both their legs. All of them were residents of Poblacion in Sta. Fe.

Initial reports that reached the Cebu Provincial Police Headquarters stated that the security guard, 26-year-old Jesus Ango, of Superlight Security Agency, was on duty at the wharf when his licensed gun accidentally fired.

CPPO director Carmelo Valmoria, based on reports from PO4 Felix Lapera through mobile phone, said that Ango had just cocked his shotgun moments before it went off and hit the eight people.

Valmoria said the Britons were already discharged from the hospital but would not file charges against Ango who is now detained at the Sta. Fe Police station for a possible case of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple injuries.

The six others were already declared by physicians out of danger but they are still in the hospital.  Garry B. Lao/RAE
