Some trees under greening program now under threat

-

Some trees planted under the Greening With our Environment Now (GWEN) Program of the provincial government have already been destroyed due to carelessness or recklessness in some municipalities.

One of the recipients of the program is the municipality of Daanbantayan that reported that even several tree guards from the plant sites were removed resulting to the disappointment and frustration of the students and teachers who worked very hard for the program spearheaded by Gov. Gwen Garcia during her first term.

This prompted the municipal officials led by Mayor Sun Shimura to urge the barangay officials and tanods to help in monitoring and securing the trees.

The officials also encouraged respective constituents to adopt the fruit-bearing trees planted in the vicinity of their residence as their own in order that these trees will be properly cultivated, monitored and secured.

The provincial government launched the GWEN program with the objective of greening the environment through tree-planting.

Under the GWEN program, the residents of Cebu province are encouraged to plant a fruit-bearing tree provided by the provincial government through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office.

The schools, both elementary and secondary in a certain municipality such as in Daanbantayan, hold a tree-planting activity every month in the different barangays more specifically along the national highways.

Town officials said the students of the different schools in the municipality plant, cultivate, nurture, and look after those trees with the supervision of their respective teachers.  — Gregg M. Rubio/BRP
