A Nigerian man, who was caught last week in possession of counterfeit traveler’s checks that he even tried to redeem or encash at a travel agency, was yesterday charged in court for attempted estafa through falsification of commercial documents.
Cebu City prosecutor Nicolas Sellon approved the filing of the case in court against Onel Foxx Jackson, who was however released after posting P40,000 bail.
The case started when American Express Company through Adventure International Tours, its travel representative in the Philippines, complained to the NBI about Jackson.
Miluz Rivera of Adventure International alleged that Jackson, last September 21, went to the travel agency supposedly to redeem or encash traveler’s checks amounting to $3,450 or P155,250 in local currency.
Rivera alleged that the checks that Jackson tried to redeem were fake, Jackson forged the signature in the checks, and that Jackson even presented a bogus passport.
Jackson failed to have the checks converted to cash because of the timely arrival of the agents of the National Bureau of Investigation that immediately arrested him.
The NBI yesterday turned over Jackson to the Bureau of Immigration. — Fred P. Languido/RAE
