Dad wants security cameras for ATMs
To prevent more incidents of automated teller machine customers being victimized by robbers, Councilor Arsenio Pacaña has proposed a resolution requiring all ATM operators in the city to install security cameras.
The councilor expressed concern on the recent reports of criminals victimizing ATM users, especially those withdrawing money from ATM machines.
Pacaña said there was even an incident in which a customer was robbed while inside the ATM booth by a man who pretended to be a customer waiting for his turn to use the machine.
He said it is the responsibility of these ATM service providers and operators to protect their customers from criminals. Likewise, he said these security devices will give the criminals second thoughts because they know they could be identified by authorities through these surveillance cameras.
Pacaña said that presently, the ATM service providers like Megalink, Bancnet and Expressnet have more than 18 million cardholders nationwide.
The councilor urged the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to oblige these service providers to install surveillance cameras in their ATM booths and machines.
The City Council is expected to tackle Pacaña’s resolution during its regular session this Wednesday. — Wenna A. Berondo/BRP
