Masiador shot dead during cockfight

A cockfight masiador (bet taker) was shot dead in the middle of an illegal cockfight in the cemetery in sitio Lawis, barangay Lorega- San Miguel yesterday afternoon.

The fatality was identified as Allan Oporto, 42, of sitio Terra Cotta barangay Tejero.

PO3 Henry Orbiso of Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office said an unidentified man shot the victim point blank in the left side of his head and he was killed instantly, falling to the ground, just beside an open grave.

Despite of the crowd present when the shooting happened, nobody could tell the police who the assailant was, all they said was that they only heard a single gunshot and people started running away.

But Orbiso believes that somebody saw the assailant, and that the assailant used a revolver in shooting the victim.

The victim’s wife, Mila, told policemen her husband told her he was going to a cockfight in barangay Cogon-Ramos, but added she was surprised to hear he had been shot in Lorega. 

She admitted that taking bets during cockfights is the main source of income of her husband.

She also said her husband does not have any enemies among their neighbors, but police believe otherwise as the assailant knew where to find him.  — Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
