Woman killed by tree blown down by storm

Strong winds brought by tropical storm Bebeng brought down a palm tree that killed a woman and hurt her husband last Thursday afternoon in barangay Matutinao, Badian town.

The police had to use a chainsaw to extract the body of Vicenta dela Peña, 45, from under the tree while her husband, Reynaldo, was immediately brought to the hospital due to severe injuries.

Responding policemen SPO3 Orlando Caballero and PO2s Jeremias Elrado and Emmanuel Caballero said around 4 p.m. the couple were sleeping in their kitchen.

It was raining at that time and strong winds dislodged a 40-foot tall palm tree near the couple’s house, it fell right on the kitchen and pinned the couple.

Vicenta was killed instantly after being hit by the trunk and the roofing of the house.

The policemen rushed Reynaldo to the Badian District Hospital but he was later transferred to a hospital in Cebu City for further treatment.
