- Ni Guam P. Logroño -

Following the May 14 elections, the Commission on Elections is now preparing for the synchronized Sangguniang Kabataan and barangay elections, which will take place five months from now.

The Comelec announced in its official website that the SK and barangay elections would be held on October 29 by virtue of Republic Act No. 9340 signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on September 22, 2005.

The SK and barangay elections were originally scheduled in October 2005 as provided under R.A. No. 9164. But the Thirteenth Congress amended the law and reset the elections to the last Monday of October this year and every three years thereafter.

Under the law, the term of office of the barangay and SK officials elected in the coming October elections will commence at noon of November 30.

The election expenses will be taken from the General Appropriations Act and from the Supplementary Appropriations.

The commission has yet to schedule its activities, such as the registration of new voters, in relation to the SK and barangay elections.

But Section 8 of R.A. No. 8189 or the Continuing Registration Act states that "the personal filing of application of registration of voters shall be conducted daily in the office of the Election Officer during regular office hours. No registration shall, however, be conducted during the period starting 120 days before a regular election and 90 days before a special election." - Gregg M. Rubio/LPM
