Applications for GSIS scholarship ends today

The deadline for the filing of applications for the 2007 GSIS Scholarship Program had been moved until today, May 7, the GSIS said citing numerous requests from its members.

An applicant for the scholarship must be legitimate children of active GSIS members and must have a general weighted average of 85 percent, or its equivalent, in his or her grades in high school.

The GSIS said that each region has been allocated with slots, the number of which is based on the configuration of GSIS membership in a particular area.

This means that those selected in the National Capital Region and in each of the regional offices shall be deemed scholars to occupy the slots allotted for the area they were drawn.

There are at least 37 scholarship slots for the Visayas, and the GSIS said the selection of recipients will be determined through a computer-assisted method to be witnessed by GSIS representatives.

An applicant shall submit to the GSIS office an accomplished scholarship programs form, two passport-size pictures (with signature in the back), certified copy of birth certificate, certified copy of 4th year (3rd grading) high school report card, and parent’s certificate of employment.

Qualifiers shall take the GSIS competitive examinations to be administered by the Center for Educational Management Scholars.

They may choose any of the four- or five-year GSIS priority courses: accountancy, actuarial science, business administration, economics, finance, management, marketing, mass communications, mathematics and statistics.

Other courses are computer science and related IT courses, engineering major in computer, civil, electrical and electronics, electronics and communications, industrial, management and mechanical.

A scholar will get a monthly stipend of P2,000 and his or her tuition and miscellaneous fees will be paid up to a maximum of P30,000 per semester.

The scholar may enroll also in summer class, provided that the subject he or she will take are given only during summer and included in the approved curriculum.

Shifting to another course is not allowed except for meritorious reasons or upon approval of the school’s appropriate officers, such as the registrar or the college dean, but this should not be done more than once or after the first semester of his or her third year studies.

The scholar who wants to transfer to another school must first request to the manager of the Human Resources Development Department, GSIS, Financial Center, Pasay City, for proper recommendation to the GSIS Management. — Jasmin R. Uy/RAE
