TF''s Kidstuff bags UNICEF-PPI outstanding kids'' newspaper/section award

Manila - The FREEMAN''s Kidstuff bagged the award for Outstanding Children''s Newspaper/Section last night in the 6th UNICEF-PPI Child-Friendly Newspaper and Journalist Awards held at the Orchid Garden Suites here.

Kidstuff is a regular Sunday section of this newspaper featuring not only write ups about children, but also articles and drawings made by children.

The other awardees in last night''s event, which is a joint project of the United Nations Children''s Education Fund and the Philippine Press Institute, were the Philippine Daily Inquirer as child-friendly newspaper of the year for the national broadsheet category. The community daily winner for the award was Leyte Samar Daily Express while Baguio Midland Courier bagged the plum for community weekly publications.

Baby Magazine won the award for child-friendly magazine of the year.

The outstanding column on children for national publications went to "Raising Babies" by Dr. Michael Tan of PDI and "Saving the Juveniles" by Tony VN Figueroa of the Mindanao Times for community newspapers.

The outstanding story on children winners were "Special Kids; Different Learning Disabilities in Children" by Nicolas Tayag in Health Care magazine for the national publication level and "Lead Them Back Home" by Stella A. Estremera of Sun Star Weekend (Davao) for the community newspaper level.

Trisha Joi Esperanza, who wrote "How to Make Baguio a Child Friendly City" in the Baguio Midland Courier won the prize for outstanding child writer.

PDI was also enshrined into the hall of fame last night.

The board of judges was headed by Elnora Avarientos, executive director of World Vision Inc.

The other members of the board of judges were Tina Monzon Palma, Project Director of Bantay Bata 163; Dr. Grace Aguiling-Dalisay, Vice-President for Academic Affairs of Miriam College; Evelyn del Rosario, Senior Manager Community Relations Division of PLDT; and Agnes Shari Aliman, National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Center.

The awards were presented b y members of the board of judges together with Amado Macasaet, chairman-president of PPI, and Dr. Rogelio Cuyno, president of Asian Institute of Journalism and Communications.
