Citom asks city to remove vendors at SRP entrance

City traffic authorities are demanding for the immediate removal of vendors that have already settled at the entrance of the South Road Properties resulting in the obstruction of traffic flow in the area.

Citom executive officer Arnel Tancinco has recommended to Vice Mayor Michael Rama the removal of vendors obstructing the corner of M.C. Briones and D. Jakosalem Streets, and the prohibition of night vending in that intersection.

Senior Inspector Fabio Cedeño, the operations officer of the Cebu City PNP Traffic Group, added that a vendor’s stall was built in this intersection and effectively obstruct traffic flow of vehicles from Carbon market.

In case the City Hall demolition team could not clear the area of vendors, Citom asked Mayor Tomas Osmeña to reactivate the Citom’s demolition team, which could do the job without undergoing the dilatory process of making request first before doing it.

The undergoing tunnel project passing by Plaza Independencia prompted authorities to transfer the entrance for SRP-bound vehicles from its original entrance, near the Malacañang sa Sugbo, to D. Jakosalem and M.C. Briones Streets, near the City Hall.

Even Mayor Osmeña observed that the new SRP entrance had caused traffic problem, especially after M.C. Briones Street was converted to two-way traffic to accommodate SRP-bound vehicles.

To solve the problem, it was suggested that all Mandaue-bound vehicles would no longer be allowed to enter Carbon area.

PUJ’s from Mandaue City passing P. Burgos Street would make a left turn to Urdaneta Street (in front of Cathedral), then turn right to M.J. Cuenco Avenue and turn left to Legaspi Extention and back to Mandaue. — Rene U. Borromeo/RAE
