Vice mayor to spearhead cleanup drive tomorrow

-
Expecting to gather two tons of garbage, Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama will spearhead the whole-day cleanup in the city's urban barangays and coastal areas tomorrow to encourage public awareness on the environment.

During yesterday's press conference in his office attended by barangay captains from the city's urban barangays, Rama announced that all the preparations for the cleanup project have already been completed.

Julito Roden of the Cebu Contractors' Association was also present during the press conference to show to the public of their group's support to the city's coastal cleanup project, which will start from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With the assistance from the barangay workers and volunteers, Rama encouraged city residents from Mabolo down to Mambaling and Duljo-Fatima to clean their surroundings.

Tomorrow's event will be the sixth coastal cleanup drive initiated by City Hall's Coastal Management Board since last year. The board already gathered about 10 tons of garbage during its previous coastal cleanup activities.

Although the barangay captains may not be able to personally supervise the cleanup drive tomorrow due to the monthly general assembly of the Association of Barangay Councils, Rama encouraged the barangay leaders to delegate the task their councilors.

The cleanup drive is aimed at rehabilitating the city's polluted creeks, rivers and shores and increasing public awareness on solid waste management and the environment. - Rene U. Borromeo/LPM
