City is challenging incumbent Mayor Arlene "Daydee" Zambo in the coming May elections.
Karen Lei Tabelin, 33, resident of barangay Daanlungsod, Toledo City yesterday filed her certificate of candidacy before the Commission on Elections. Tabelin, who is popularly known as "Kartabz" to her friends, filed her COC for mayor shortly before noon yesterday at the office of the election officer in Toledo.
Tabelin is the niece of incumbent Vice Mayor Ricardo "Ric" Rafols who is also reported to be interested in running for mayor against Zambo.
Although she was born in Cebu City on January 16, 1974, Tabelin is now residing in Toledo City. In fact, she is a registered voter in precinct 104-B of barangay Daanlungsod.
Running as an independent candidate, Tabelin promises to bring in more investors to address the unemployment problem of the city. She likewise expressed concern to address environmental issues.
Tabelin's elder brother, Warren Lorenzo, also filed his certificate of candidacy for councilor together with her.
Tabelin, aside from her business, is reportedly sourcing out her finances for the campaign from the support given by her Japanese fiancé.
Tabelin's filing of her COC yesterday is expected to jeopardize the plan of her uncle, Vice Mayor Ricardo Rafols, to run for mayor against Zambo. Earlier Rafols was reported to have been eyeing a rematch with Zambo in the May polls. Rafols ran but lost to Zambo during the previous elections. - Fred P. Languido/MEEV
