Mayor Tomas Osmeña has already approved a plan to open a new road connecting Vicente Rama Avenue in barangay Calamba with Katipunan Street in barangay Labangon, and agreed to purchase a private lot that would be affected by it, a city councilor said recently.
Councilor Joey Daluz III, chairman of the council's committee on real property management, said that this was meant to decongest traffic at the intersection of V. Rama and N. Bacalso Avenues.
He explained that to realize the planned road, the city government would have to buy the 1304-square meter private lot in the site.
About 40 informal settlers or squatters occupying the government lot in barangay Calamba where the new road will traverse will have to be evicted in the process, Daluz said.
Daluz said that once the road project is completed, motorists coming from P. del Rosario Extension no longer have to take the V. Rama-Natalio Bacalso intersection to reach Labangon.
"Moderitso na lang ang mga sakyanan kay ang karsada mosumpay ra man sa P. del Rosario Extension ug adto mogawas sa eskina Katipunan ug A. Lopez Streets. Magamit pa ang yuta sa syudad nga gipuy-an ra sa mga squatters," Daluz told The Freeman.
Traffic congestion has been the usual problem at corner V. Rama and N. Bacalso avenues until now, especially during the morning and afternoon peak hours.
A traffic enforcer assigned at the area commented, "Kon may access road na gikan sa V. Rama nga direktang mo-connect sa eskina Katipunan ug A. Lopez, mominos na g'yod ang problema sa traffic dinhi sa Natalio Bacalso Avenue."
Daluz began preparing for submission to the city council his proposed resolution that will allow the mayor to go into a contract between the city and the property owner to buy the lot that the new road has to cut across. - Rene U. Borromeo
