Tomas mum on sister Georgia's political plans

-
Mayor Tomas Osmeña refused to comment on the plans of his younger sister Georgia who earlier asked the court to order the Commission on Elections to include her in the list of city voters.

The mayor also said he only read in the newspapers about Georgia's petition to be considered as voter of the north district of the city but said he does not know if she has plans to seek a government position.

"I don't know. I just read it today. I have no idea because I don't talk to them," Osmeña told reporters.

In a three-page petition, Georgia said she failed to register last year because of health reasons. She said she had been a resident of Cebu City for 17 years and had all the qualifications to be a registered voter.

Meanwhile, the first councilman of barangay Pahina San Nicholas yesterday announced his interest to join Osmeña's Bando-Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan to run for councilor in the city's south district.

Ryan Go, 28, a first-term councilman, said he believed that he has proven enough during his stint in the barangay council and was challenged to seek higher position.

"Based on my performance in the barangay, I know I can do more for the city. I think I did my part already in the barangay. It's time to move on," he said in an interview with reporters.

As chairman of peace and order committee of his barangay, Go said his accomplishments included minimizing of gambling in his barangay and educating the youth.

If he would be given the chance to serve the residents of the city's south district, he said he would focus on education, health and livelihood because these are the things that people really find hard to achieve.

But Osmeña said he does not have the line-up of BOPK candidates running under his political party and did not endorse anybody yet. "There's no assurance. Every one can be in the long list. The telephone directory can be in the long list. So what's there to announce?"

The mayor has announced in the past that there is no such thing as equity of the incumbent in BOPK and he would prefer somebody less popular but has competence to be included in his slate in the coming elections. -Wenna A. Berondo /LPM
