Three men hurt trying to avoid a checkpoint

Three men landed in the hospital after their motorcycle crashed when they avoided policemen conducting a checkpoint along the national highway of barangay Pitalo, San Fernando town, last night,
Police identified the three as Arvin Cahayag, of sitio Magtalisay, barangay Balud; Catalino Cañete, of barangay Pitalo, both from San Fernando and Galileo Genayas, of Can-asujan, Carcar town.
Policemen led by S/Insp. Antonieto Cuyos and Barangay Intelligence Network operatives were conducting a mobile checkpoint at the said place when the motorcycle bearing plate number YI-5746, which was driven by Cahayag with Genayas and Cañete riding tandem, passed them by, ignoring the checkpoint signboard placed on the center of the road.
Policemen blew a whistle to get their attention but Cahayag sped off. The roads were wet and he lost control of the motorcycle and ploughed into a gutter. All of them were knocked unconscious by the collision that also damaged the motorcycle.
Policemen brought the three, who were reportedly drunk, to the nearest hospital, but they were later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. They were already declared in safe condition as of yesterday.
PO3 Ricardo Marquiso said they found out Cahayag did not have the documents for the motorcycle, which could have been why he sought to avoid them. A case for disobedience to person in authority is being prepared against the three. - Norvie S. Misa/BRP
