With the rescheduling of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit to January, colleges and universities in Cebu will resume classes on Monday.
Cebu's major colleges and universities said that they have opted to hold classes to recover from the missed days because of the early vacation they have given to the students due to the summit.
They have earlier announced an early Christmas vacation for students starting from December 8.
The Cebu Doctors' University issued an advisory that it will resume classes on Monday, while others like the University of San Carlos and the University of the Visayas will resume classes on Tuesday to give students who already went home in their provinces time to return.
For public schools in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu Lapu that were affected by the holiday, education officials said they would also resume classes on Tuesday.
Department of Education Superintendent Leonilo Oliva said they have decided to resume classes on Tuesday. "The notice was so late so we have to start on Tuesday so that teachers and students will have time to go back here."
DepEd suspended classes for a week because of the summit. Oliva said they are just only following the directive issued by Malacañang.
In compliance with Presidential Proclamation 1032, DepEd regional director Carolino Mordeno issued a memorandum informing the three schools divisions of the special non-working holidays from December 11 to 14.
