A 22-year-old man was waylaid and shot on his way home after playing a card game, known as "tong-its", in his neighbor's house at barangay Guiwang in Alcoy town the other night.
A still unidentified assailant hid among banana trees and shot Joel Plando thrice, hitting the victim in the right hip.
The assailant quickly fled while neighbors immediately took Plando to the Alcoy Rural Health Center. He was later moved to the Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
PO3 Emilio Carungay of the Alcoy police Plando might be a victim of mistaken identity or thrill attack.
Carungay said the victim had no known enemy in the barangay and was popularly friendly.
"Maayo man ning bataa, unya himarkada og dili trouble maker. Posibleng na mistaken identity lang ni o ba kaha, paregla," he said.
The police are still doing a follow-up investigation to identify the culprit. - Norvie S. Misa/RAE
