August 31, 2006 | 12:00am
Ten fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing activities on the seawaters off the towns of Carcar and Oslob, the other day.
Five of them were arrested in Carcar. They were Gil Alforque, 44, Proxce Lapitan, 25, Dindo Villaren, 22, Randy Lapitan,19, and a 15-year-old boy -all from San Fernando town.
Carcar policemen and Bantay Dagat personnel spotted these fishermen using the prohibited compressor in catching fish, resulting in the arrest.
The town authorities seized the fishermen's assorted catch that was placed inside an ice bucket, then turned this over to the regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
The law bans fishermen from using compressor, as their breathing apparatus, in diving for fish.
In Oslob town, on the other hand, five more fishermen were arrested but this time it was because of their use of the prohibited fishing net.
Those arrested were Dario Jamon, 35, Antonio Dizon, 29, Jorge Orbita, 24, Caludio Jaos, 30, and Victorio Jamon, 23 - all from barangay Candayong, Dalaguete.
The town police seized from them five kilos of a flyingfish species, locally known as barungoy. After interrogation, however, they were made to pay the P2500 fine and eventually released. - Jose P. Sollano/RAE'
