PB backs DepEd move to strengthen English language

The Provincial Board is set to pass the resolution supporting the move of the Department of Education to study the negative effects of dubbed English movies on Filipino students.

The resolution, sponsored by Board Member Juan Bolo, states that DepEd is presently looking for ways to strengthen the English language in schools.

One of DepEd's undertakings is to look into the negative effects of English movies dubbed in Filipino on the students' language skills. Bolo said that this move is geared toward realizing the campaign to restore mastery of the English language.

Earlier, newly installed DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapuz announced that he is seeking ways to strengthen the English language among students as he would form a group of educators to study if the dubbing of English movies in Filipino for television had a negative effect on the language skills of students.

Some television stations in the country have been showing foreign movies with Filipino sub-titles in a bid to attract more viewers.

Lapuz said the campaign is important to restore the students' mastery of the English language and to determine what causes the deterioration of the English language among Filipinos.

Following his installation as DepEd secretary, Lapuz immediately announced that he would push for the return of English as the primary medium of instruction in schools in order to bring back the "glory days" of the Filipinos' mastery of the language. - Flor Z. Perolina/LPM
