Mordeno agrees with plan to start classes in September

Department of Education regional director Carolino Mordeno is amenable to the proposal moving the opening of classes from June, which is the start of the rainy season, to September.

Senate President Franklin Drilon and Senate President Pro-Tempore Juan Flavier Drilon and Flavier have asked DepEd to conduct a study on the matter for probable implementation next year considering that the first three months of the school year - June, July, and August - are peak periods for typhoons in the country.

Drilon said DepEd should consider the proposal since opening the classes in September would spare the children from the problems that would arise during the rainy season.

Mordeno said a public consultation should be conducted before the implementation since Filipinos are used to the old school calendar.

The proposal follows the school calendar of the United States when classes start in September and end in June or August.

Mordeno, however, said the proposal needs further study. - Jasmin R. Uy
