Soc orders demolition of illegal structures at Cansojong creek

-
Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez has ordered the demolition of the 21 illegal structures at the Cansojong creek citing that settlement at the area is perilous most especially during rainy days.

In Executive Order No. 2006-12 he penned, Fernandez exercised his police power for the removal of the structures built by illegal settlers near the creek before any untoward incident might happen as the weather bureau has already warned of massive rains in the next months that could result to flooding.

Fernandez also stressed that the throwing of solid waste into the creek by those living in the area has been pointed at as major cause of the flooding.

Thus, the Cansojong creek, he said, "should be free from obstruction in order to allow the free flow of the run-off waters coming from the different city barangays."

Barangays Cansojong, Tangke and San Roque, where this creek runs through, are already identified by the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council as "low-lying areas" that are therefore "prone to flashfloods."

In line with this, the city engineer's office has already identified 21 illegal structures that have to be demolished.

"The move is to pre-empt and prevent the impending imminent, clear and present danger of calamity resulting to the loss of lives and property on the possible occurrence of flash floods," Fernandez said. - Liv G. Campo
