The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 7 has ordered Talisay City to close its open dumpsite in barangay Biasong.
"Please be advised to conduct closure procedure and rehabilitation of your abandoned dumpsite in barangay Biasong," the letter, addressed to Mayor Socrates Fernandez from DENR Regional Director Celso Loriega Jr., stated.
The environment agency recommended that after the closure the city should see to it that there should be "adeduate surface water and peripheral site drainage control" and that it should install a methane gas piping system or gas aeration piping system using perforated bamboo pipes to allow the already covered garbage to breathe. These pipes should also be covered with a two-meter thick soil, according to Loriega.
Immediately after abandoning the site, the city, through its engineering department, has started rehabilitating the site by covering it with limestone.
The city last January asked the DENR on what to do with the open dumpsite. The city is planning to transform it into a facility in the future.
Right now, the city is utilizing its new sanitary landfill, a DENR-approved site, in barangay Tapul.
