A 39-year-old newsboy, who also worked as a part-time motorcycle-for-hire driver, was shot dead infront of his live-in partner outside a mall along Salinas Drive in barangay Lahug yesterday morning.
Eduardo Cuestas, a resident of sitio Mojon, barangay Banilad, Mandaue City, was killed on the spot after he was shot several times in the head and body before his stunned partner Leny Acosta.
Acosta told the police that two helmeted men on a blue motorcycle arrived at the place where she and Cuestas were selling newspapers and immediately shot Cuestas, who was sitting on his parked motorcycle.
She said it was the passenger, clad in a dark jacket, who fired at Cuestas several times. Cuestas still managed to run a few meters away but the assailant followed him and pumped more bullets into him until he fell dead on the sidewalk.
The assailant returned to the waiting motorcycle and sped off toward Salinas Drive.
There was speculations that this was a vigilante killing but this has not been verified, although Acosta admitted to the police that Cuestas was detained at the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center a long time ago for theft.
Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered seven spent shells and two slugs of a .45 cal. pistol from the crime scene, the blue Suzuki motorcycle owned by the victim was also brought to the Homicide Section office. - Flor Z. Perolina
