Councilor Iñaki Jordana, during the council's first session for the year yesterday, said the problem on scavengers should be addressed before violence could erupt among these people in their fight for garbage.
Jordana said there are about 70 people, mostly from barangay Inayawan and Minglanilla town, scavenging in the new landfill and that it is possible that a fight would ensue once they disagree over something. He suggested that the city deploy policemen in the landfill to bring order among scavengers and keep them from fighting.
The councilor also said that scavengers should not be allowed in the landfill because these people scatter the materials that the city places on the garbage so that these will not give off any bad smell.
Vice Mayor Aberdovey Belleza, realizing that the presence of scavengers in the landfill could cause headaches for the city government, directed Councilor Shirley Belleza, to check on the problem.
The councilor said she will conduct an ocular inspection first before implementing possible solutions. - Liv G. Campo
