Man admits killing foreigner, surrenders to cops

Driven by his conscience, a security guard who stabbed dead a Bangladeshi finally surrendered to the police yesterday after 10 days in hiding.

Welman Cabuguas, 26, a stay-in security guard in El Dorado Subdivision, barangay Banilad, Cebu City, surrendered to Vice Control Section chief George Ylanan yesterday afternoon after he admitted to have stabbed Zubaid Azizz, 37, a resident of Banilad Greens, Mandaue City last December 30.

Ylanan yesterday said that someone called him from barangay Calamba telling him that Cabuguas wanted to surrender after he stabbed somebody.

Ylanan said his neighbors came to the conclusion that Cabuguas killed someone after they often saw him climb up to the roof of his house and yell that he never meant to kill anybody and that the police were after him.

Last December 31, Azziz was surfing the Internet at the house of a friend when the suspect, who was allegedly drunk at the time, barged in and stabbed Azziz in the chest for no apparent reason.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Perpetual Succour Hospital where he died the following day, which was New Year's Day.

After Cabuguas confessed his crime, one of his neighbors called the police.

Ylanan said the suspect told him that he has long wanted to surrender but did not know where to go. He is now detained at the city police office stockade.

Police are also waiting for witnesses to back up his confession and identify him as the perpetrator of the crime. - Flor Z. Perolina
