1 dead, 2 tanods hurt in shooting incidents

Two separate shooting incidents, which could have been perpetrated by just one assailant, happened in Mabolo and the pier area yesterday dawn, victimizing a man and two barangay tanods.

The first incident happened in H. Joaquino Street, Mabolo, about 1:30 a.m. yesterday where Roberto Oso, 46, a resident of Gil Tudtud Street, was shot dead.

Witnesses said a man on a yellow motorcycle, wearing a crash helmet and a striped polo shirt, shot Oso dead as he was walking home from his girlfriend's house.

The assailant first just passed him by, then made a U-turn and shot him several times with a gun equipped with a silencer, killing him on the spot before speeding to M.J. Cuenco Avenue.

Recovered from the crime scene were seven empty shells of a .45 cal. pistol.

Witnesses said that prior to the incident, the assailant was seen crossing the road as if looking for somebody. Police are not yet classifying it as a vigilante killing as the victim had no police records, although many said he was a drunkard.

Then at 2:10 a.m. yesterday, another shooting incident happened in sitio Silangan II, barangay Tejero.

Tejero tanod chief Danilo Dilla, 52, a resident of Alviola Street, Cebu City, and fellow tanod Nestor Mondejar, 43, were with other tanods having a coffee break after patrolling their area while Pedro Capangpangan, 43, a shipping company employee and Romeo Bito, 28, a porter, were drinking not far away when a man on a yellow motorcycle arrived.

Witnesses also described the assailant as wearing a crash helmet and a striped polo shirt.

The assailant pulled out his gun -that also had a silencer- but dropped it. He picked it up and sped off, but later returned and shot at the men, hitting Dilla in the left foot and Mondejar in the left shoulder. Bito was wounded in a right hand by a splinter.

The assailant was allegedly drunk as he fell off the bike some distance away but was still able to get back on and get it running toward MacArthur Boulevard while the victims were rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center by responding policemen.

Eleven .45 cal. shells were recovered from the crime scene.

Homicide Section chief Mario Monilar said they have yet to match the shells recovered from both crime scenes to determine if both crimes were perpetrated by the same assailant. - Norvie S. Misa, correspondent
